The HBCU’s new facility gives students hands-on experience in journalism, sports broadcasting, filmmaking, podcasting and emerging media.

Morehouse College officially opened its Morehouse Multimedia Center on Wednesday, September 23. The initiative, supported by Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand, is creating a new space where students can develop practical skills in journalism, sports media, and emerging digital technologies, according to CBS News.

The center includes a modular production studio, editing bays and approximately $250,000 worth of equipment, according to Morehouse. Students will use the facility to produce digital stories, podcasts, films and sports broadcasts while learning from professional and award-winning content creators.

“The Morehouse Multimedia Center represents our vision for preparing students not only to participate in the future of media, but to lead it,” said Emani Saucier, the center’s inaugural director and co-founder.

The facility was made possible with support from Jordan Brand, which has been investing in journalism and sports-related education at Morehouse. In 2021, Jordan Brand committed more than $1 million toward scholarships and academic programs for Morehouse students studying journalism and sports-related fields, according to the college.

The investment connects Michael Jordan’s brand to an HBCU journalism program that is building a pipeline for students interested in sports, culture and media. Morehouse launched its journalism major in 2022; the new center is designed to give students practical experience alongside their academic work.

Mikki Harris, chair of the Journalism in Sports, Culture and Social Justice department, described the center as a bridge between classroom learning and professional media production. “The center serves as the bridge between critical thinking and professional practice for our students,” Harris said. Faculty members will also be able to use the facility to digitize research and distribute their work to broader audiences.

Morehouse says nearly 120 journalism-program alumni currently work in media and sports, while more than 60 graduates have earned advanced degrees in the field. The college also reported that content produced using equipment purchased for the center generated more than 1 million social media views in August.
